Welcome From The Program Chairs

Dear Colleagues:

We wish to extend a strong invitation to you to submit papers to and attend the SMS Special Conference on Latin America in Rio. We believe the combination of an important emerging market theme with the exotic location of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will make for a fantastic special conference that is rich in both academic stimulation and location-specific enjoyment. With a conference location split between the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) Rio campus, located in the middle of a rainforest, and the conference hotel on Copacabana beach in Rio, participants will be exposed to diverse aspects of life in Brazil.

This conference seeks to create a scholarly forum for the study of Latin America companies, industries, trade and investment. Latin America is demonstrating increasing strategic connections to other emerging markets and to the developed world, and has gained prominence as an FDI destination – particularly for North American firms with close ties to the region as well as for European firms (and particularly Spanish companies), and as a source of imports (particularly to China). Accordingly, we call for contributions examining strategies for Latin America and Latin America’s new strategic role in broader emerging market and globalization studies. We particularly hope to encourage research collaboration between Latin America scholars and scholars from other regions of the world.

To help us achieve our goals, we have gathered a diverse number of advisors with expertise in strategy, emerging markets, and various aspects of Latin America. While many come from traditional SMS-type backgrounds, we have also brought in people from outside the core strategy area to help challenge us to adapt and generate strategy theory that applies to both the Latin American context, as well as emerging markets in general. We are planning a diverse set of activities, starting with pre-conference doctoral consortium and paper development workshops, panels featuring business professionals from around Latin America, paper presentation and interactive roundtable discussions, and local cultural events such as a tour through the rainforest on the PUC campus and a Gala dinner at the famous “churrascaria” Porcao Rios in the Flamengo section of Rio.

Overall, we believe it will be wonderful and enriching event to attend. We hope you do too and look forward to seeing you in Rio!
